Mt. Antero, Yet Another Colorado Fourteener.

From the summit of Mt. Antero (Colorado’s 10th highest peak at 14,276′) looking north. The nearest prominent peak is Mt. Princeton. Antero is known not only as a Fourteener, but also it’s abundance of gemstone mines…
Black and white image of the layered ridges as seen from our Antero summit climb. Notice far right/middle the jeep roads that serve prospectors even to this day. The valley that opens up below (left) is the Arkansas River Valley with the flat area that of Salida, CO. You see beyond Salida the beginning rise of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains as they progress toward New Mexico.
Again from the summit, Cronin Peak is a beautifully colored mountain and the state’s 75th tallest at 13,877 feet. The red is a giveaway to the rich mineral content in the area, criss crossed with old jeep and mining roads that sometimes reached 13,000 feet in elevation, including activity on Antero itself the day we hiked.
